Here are the answers to some frequently asked questions

Q: What sort of organisation is Royal Spa Brass?

A: Royal Spa Brass is properly constituted as an Unincorporated Association. It is a non-profit making organisation.

Q: How is Royal Spa Brass managed?

A: Royal Spa Brass is managed by a team of volunteers operating as an Executive Committee which is elected by the members of the organisation. These elected representatives fulfil the important roles of Treasurer, Secretary, Welfare Officer, Events Manager, Asset Manager and Librarian. There are also three trustees who have responsibilities to act in the best long-term interests of the organisation.

Q: How is Royal Spa Brass funded?

A: Our main income comes from concerts and public appearances. There is a steady stream of income from membership subscriptions which are kept as low as possible. In addition, we have been fortunate to have received significant grant funding. Our finances are managed by our Treasurer and our accounts are independently audited.

Q: Where did you get all your instruments and equipment from?

A: Our main capital funding was provided by Arts Council Lottery Funding. We were awarded £72,000 which was used to purchase a wide range of instruments, percussion equipment, music technology, and a Van Trailer. We also received a magnificent grant of £20,000 for tubas from the Foundation for Sport and the Arts.

Q: How do I know my children will be safe at Royal Spa Brass?

A: We follow the Child Protection Policy and Procedures that are recommended as good practice by the British Federation of Brass Bands. We have a documented Child Protection Policy, an elected Welfare Officer, and appropriate CRB checking.

Q: Most Brass Bands concentrate on competitions don't they?

A:  Many of them do spend a lot of time and effort preparing for and taking part in competitions. However, at Royal Spa Brass we prefer to concentrate on high quality, entertaining, concert performances.

Q: Shouldn't there only be about 30 players in a brass band?

A: Strictly speaking there is a fixed format and in some of the more competitive bands they stick rigidly to this. However, we have a much more flexible approach at Royal Spa Brass where we adjust the size of the band to suit the players, the music and the occasion. We have enough instruments to equip at least three full bands!

Q: Aren't brass bands old fashioned?

A: There is certainly a long and proud tradition associated with brass bands. However, we take a fresh and modern approach to this tradition. We play a wide variety of music, we have a variety of ensembles and styles, and we keep things fresh and exciting with workshops, courses, programmes and projects that we all enjoy.
